Ace of Swords Description and Symbolism

A hand is coming forth out of a cloud holding a mighty sword. The sword pierces a king’s crown in which there is an olive branch to the left representing peace, and a palm, to the right, representing misery. These two polar opposites balance the crown. An olive branch is symbolically feminine, while the palm is symbolically masculine. These two opposites represent the double edged meaning to the Ace of Swords. Sometimes a king or queen has to be merciful, yet forceful to get the job done.

There are six Yods around the swords. They are evenly divided; three on one side and three on the other. Every letter in the Hebrew alphabet has a Yod in it. It is the foundation of all the other letters. It is important to note that six Yods bring us back to Key 6, the Lovers card. Another name for the Lovers card is discrimination and what better tool should you have than a sword to cut through to the truth? Discrimination comes from the Latin to discern, which means to divide something in order to see it clearly. Clarity comes from discernment, for only a discerning soul can see to the truth of the situation. It is also well noted by occultists that the Lovers card has been assigned the Hebrew letter Zain, which means sword.
